Accessing the abundant energy required to be a good servant-leader.

When you think of summer, do you think of fun, play, and the good times often associated with childhood? Did you remember using your energy and imagination to create and have fun?  

In this month’s Servant Leadership Community of Practice, we will discuss the importance of play and renewal for accessing the energy and creativity required to be a good servant-leader.

Using small and large group discussions with peers, attendees will explore key learning lessons from the research and teaching of Ann McGee-Cooper’s KidSpirit to focus on:

• Understanding the link between play, renewal, energy, and being a good servant leader.
• Accessing the joy and energy of childhood as the foundation for joy and energy in adulthood.
• Breaking the negative work spiral in order to free ourselves to fully serve others.

The “How-To” Formula for Servant Leadership

We are often asked, “How do I be a servant-leader? What are the things I need to do? Is there a list of action items I can follow?”    

In this month’s Servant Leadership Community of Practice, we will discuss the genius and challenge of Robert Greenleaf’s ‘how-to’ formula for servant leadership. Greenleaf and servant leadership scholar Isabel Lopez says, “The formula is simple, S = S. Serving = Serving.”  

Understanding the concept of serving is at the heart of understanding servant leadership. Yet this foundational word is often misunderstood.

Using small and large group discussions with peers, attendees will explore key learning lessons from Greenleaf’s writings about servant leadership to:

• Define serving.
  
• Develop actionable servant leadership “how to” behaviors.
• Realize the importance of authentically understanding servant leadership, personally and in organizations, at this time in history.

This month’s topic: Love Them Anyway

The Effective Starting Point for Servant Leadership

Love is a universal concept. So as a leader, how do you bring love into the workplace in a way that is appropriate?

In this month’s Servant Leadership Community of Practice, we will discuss Dr. Kent Keith’s speech, “Love Them Anyway,” which was presented at the 2023 Conference on Servant Leadership at Viterbo University. He says that “love is the effective starting point for servant leadership.”

He suggests there are eight things you can do to demonstrate that you care about your colleagues, stakeholders, and employees in the workplace.

Using small and large group discussions with peers, attendees will explore key learning lessons from Keith’s speech to:

• Answer the question: “Why is love the starting point for effective servant leadership?”
• Develop appropriate behaviors to show your colleagues, stakeholders, and employees that you care about them.
• Find unique ways to be an effective servant-leader to help your organization be successful in serving others.
