This month’s topic: The Servant Leader by Jim Autry

James A Autry is a best-selling author, poet, and former Fortune 500 executive.   In his book, The Servant Leader, Autry doesn’t give easy answers for being a servant leader in the workplace.  Instead, he gives practical application and advice to the servant leader/manager.  First, he says, find good people, train them well, and then develop the tools that create a servant leadership workplace.  Not just any tools.  Servant leadership tools for facing organizational issues like firings, layoffs, re-organization, and personal issues of employees.  Autry speaks directly to what is needed when leadership goes wrong and times are bad.

In small group discussions and leadership exercises, you will take away tools, ideas, and resources for implementing servant leadership.  This session will be facilitated by Christa Williams, Executive Director and Learning Facilitator at Sophia.

This month’s topic: The Dream Manager by Matthew Kelly

Why do you go to work each day?  Do you have a dream that you are working toward?

If you are a positional leader in a company do you know why the people who work with you come to work each day?

In Matthew Kelly’s book, The Dream Manager, each of us, especially those in a positional leadership role is invited to understand the power of dreams to bring out the best version of him or herself.  The book is a story of a fictional company that is grappling with real problems of high turnover and low morale, not unlike what is happening in companies across the globe right now.  The Dream Manager is about the connection between the dreams we hold and the culture of a workplace that makes achieving those dreams possible.

Based on the ideas in the book, we will:

• Understand how the engagement concepts in the book reflect servant leadership,
• Create an individual ‘Dream List,’
• And, develop ways to create an environment where you can be the best version of yourself, while at the same time moving the company forward to being the best version of itself.

In small group discussions and leadership exercises, you will take away tools, ideas, and resources for implementing the dream manager philosophy, personally and in your workplace.  This session will be facilitated by Christa Williams, Executive Director and Learning Facilitator at Sophia.

The focus of this month’s Servant Leadership Community Conversation is Adam Grant’s book, Think Again.  Grant is a Wharton professor and best-selling author.

Could it possibly be true that most of what you know is wrong?  And, if you are wrong – since you are wrong – how can you change your mindset (re-think your thinking) in order to be a more effective servant-leader?  How can you humbly open yourself to learn from and with others?  These will be some of the questions we discuss in small group discussions and leadership exercises facilitated by Matt Kosec, Principal and Founder of Matthew Kosec Consulting.  You will take away tools, ideas, and resources for re-thinking your thinking.

This month’s topic: The Spirit of Servant Leadership edited by Shann Ray Ferch & Larry Spears with a foreword by Peter Block

This month’s book is definitely not a “how-to” book filled with quick fixes, tools, and techniques for practicing servant leadership.  It is, however, a  book filled with wisdom, stories, and practical application of “how-to” to think about servant leadership.

Facilitated by Sophia Partners Executive Director, Christa Williams, this session will invite attendees to learn from servant leadership thought-leaders featured in the book such as Peter Block, Margaret Wheatley, and Deborah Welch, which includes a story about Sophia founder Ginny Gilmore.   Through learning lessons, small group discussions, thought-provoking dialogue and practical application we will explore:

• The grammatical significance of the hyphen used in the term servant-leader,
• How servant leadership coaching makes an impact on those served,
• And, the impact of changing our questions makes a difference in how people build relationships, get work done and inspire positive change.
